FAFSA Night Success – “I’m going to college!”

May 15, 2012 Categories: FAFSA, Financial Aid, Grants, UHEAA by Bryan Lee 0 Comments

This is why we do what we do. This is why we LOVE what we do.

A senior at DaVinci Academy in Ogden, Utah said that he didn’t plan on attending college when his teacher spoke to him towards the end of January.  He didn’t think he or his family could afford it. After a little persuasion, his teacher convinced him to come to the UHEAA FAFSA Night happening at their school – to see what we could do. He came with his mom, who was prepared with all of their tax records. They were at the UHEAA FAFSA Night for the entire two hours with the UHEAA representative helping them multiple times throughout the night. By the end of the session, the student found out he would be granted the full pell grant amount:  $5,500. He had put in the school information for Weber State University and had his financial aid Information sent there. The next day, the student and his teacher also completed his application to attend Weber State, as well as an application for the “Dream Weber” program. He was accepted into Weber and found out that he would be receiving extra help to cover any additional tuition costs through the Dream Weber program.

Within a week – the student’s entire outlook had changed.  Every time he sees his teacher in the hall, he says, “I’m going to college!”  He is excited that he is going to have the opportunity to attend college – something he previously thought to be impossible. The teacher at DaVinci was grateful that UHEAA came to her school for a FAFSA Night and had this to say, “It was wonderful for me to see the effect hosting a FAFSA Night could have for our students – and one student in particular. Thanks for sending the UHEAA reps to help – and make such a difference in one student’s life!”
